The city of Miami Beach launches a residency programme to help artists and businesses suffering of Art Basel’ cancellation. The initiative encourages property owners to lend their vacant spaces for free and offers $2,500 stipends to artists. Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber “We’re thinking that this is something that will provide a little vitality to a segment of our community, our economy, that has been racked by this Covid virus…”

Titled “Miami Beach Open House”, it is an open call for artists of all disciplines and nonprofit cultural organizations to participate. A curatorial advisory committee made up of three members from the City of Miami Beach Art in Public Places Committee (AiPP) and two representatives from the City of Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council will select a pool of up to 75 artists and nonprofit cultural organizations for participating property owners to consider. Participants and property owner will work collaboratively on all other aspects of occupying the space.

At the same time, the Miami Design District will host a ten-days arts programme, running from 27 November to 6 December 2020. The initiative will see the Design Miami fair return to its original home in the Moore Building, and feature live events, activations and shows by “major international galleries that regularly exhibit” at Art Basel in Miami Beach and have been offered temporary spaces within the 18-square-block neighbourhood.
